Recent cold temperatures and an extended winter have most of us reaching for additional food to help keep us warm. For some people, comfort food leaves them a little too comfortable, allowing the body to morph into grizzly bear status. If you don’t want your body to accumulate fat but still want to enjoy scrumptious grub, here are three delicious pig-out foods that won’t pack on the pounds (in moderation) :
This Tex-Mex staple can become a really healthy comfort food when you load it with beans and veggies. Once you give it the works (too much meat, cheese, sour cream, chips, and other things) then you’re pretty much eating a reverse nacho. If you can’t resist the meat, try ground turkey or extra-lean beef as alternatives.
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Sure, the traditional Italian classic has a bad rap sheet, but it’s probably because of the way we eat it. A huge plate of pasta with lots of meatballs can rack up to a thousand calories! The USDA recommends grains to be only a quarter of each meal. Additionally, you can add vegetables and use lean beef rather than sausage.
Poor old potato, always getting sidelined when someone is on a diet. Fact of the matter is, a potato has plenty of nutrients like potassium, vitamin C, and fiber. Why do people shy away from them, then? Because mashed potatoes usually have too much butter and milk in them. Keep things healthy by replacing these with low-fat milk, plain Greek yogurt, and chopped chives. Miss the butter? Put a bit on top and let it melt. It’s amazingly enough compared to drowning your recipe in it.
